Why Sync Google Calendar with Apple Calendar?

Syncing your Google Calendar app with the default calendar of your Apple devices is a minor tweak that brings major convenience to your daily routine. This is especially handy if you already use the Apple ecosystem.

Here is why syncing the two calendars makes sense:

  • All-in-one scheduling: Combine work, personal, and shared Google Calendar events into one clean view across all your Apple devices. Instead of managing multiple calendars, you can just access all your commitments in one place
  • Cross-device access: Check, update, and block time on your calendar from your Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch without logging into Google
  • Real-time updates: Automatically reflect changes made in Google Calendar and online meeting tools inside Apple Calendar, so everything stays current. No need to manually re-enter appointments or double-check events in either calendar app
  • Simplified notifications: Get consistent reminders through Apple’s native notification system, so you don’t miss anything
  • Better productivity: Organize your day effectively with a shared calendar. If you work in different time zones, an integrated calendar means you always stay updated on the correct times, avoiding scheduling conflicts

How to Sync Google Calendar with Apple Calendar (Step-by-Step Guide)

Follow these steps to connect your Google Calendar with Apple Calendar:

Step 1: Open the Apple Calendar app on your Mac

Open the Apple Calendar app on your Mac

First, you will need to work with the Calendar app on your Mac. Open Apple Calendar from the Dock or Applications folder. This is where you will connect your Google account, so any updates made in Google Calendar will show up automatically. Don’t worry, you won’t lose any existing Apple events.

Step 2: Go to Calendar > Accounts

Go to Calendar > Accounts

With the Calendar app open, click ‘Calendar’ in the top menu bar. This opens Calendar’s Preferences. Select ‘Accounts’ from the top menu in the settings box. You should be able to see your Internet Accounts settings now. This tab will also let you add external calendars.

Step 3: Add your Google account

Add your Google account

Click the ‘+’ button at the bottom left in the Accounts window to add a new account. Choose ‘Google’ from the list of options.

Click the ‘+’ button and choose Google

A new window asking you to sign in with your Google credentials will pop up. Enter your email and password, then follow the prompts to allow access.

📅 Bonus: On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Calendar > Accounts > Add Account > Google. Sign in, and make sure the Calendar toggle is turned on after authentication.

Step 4: Enable calendar syncing

Enable calendar syncing

Now that you’ve signed in to your Google account, you’ll see a list of options for what you want to sync. This includes Mail, Contacts, and Calendars.

Make sure the ‘Calendars’ option is checked. You can uncheck the rest if you only want to sync calendar events. Click ‘Done’ to finish the setup.

🧠 Fun fact: The 📅 emoji displays July 17 because that’s when Apple first introduced iCal in 2002—a date now immortalized in both the emoji and the app icon.

Step 5: Check your synced calendars in the app

Now, head back to the Apple Calendar app. Your Google Calendar events will now appear in the left sidebar and stay updated in real time—no manual refresh is needed.

You can also visit the Calendar sync page and check or uncheck the names of any calendars according to your needs.

Note: Depending on your system’s fetch settings, Apple Calendar may take a few minutes to reflect new Google Calendar events.

Step 6: Customize your calendar view

Customize your calendar view

Once everything is synced, take a minute to customize how your iPhone calendar appears. You can rename calendars, assign different colors, or choose which ones show by default. This helps you quickly identify personal events from work commitments and makes your calendar easier to manage.

Limitations of Syncing Google Calendar with Apple Calendar

Syncing only your calendars is super handy, but it’s not perfect. There are still a few things Apple Calendar won’t do with your Google account. But before you rely on this setup entirely, be aware of some key limitations.

  • No email notifications for events: You can’t set up email reminders on your Apple Calendar for Google Calendar events
  • Can’t create new Google calendars: You can view and edit existing Google Calendar events from your default calendar on Apple devices once you sync it with Apple Calendar. However, you will need to log into Google Calendar directly in case you want to create a new one
  • Doesn’t support room scheduler: Certain Google Calendar features like Room Scheduler or resource booking aren’t available through the Apple Calendar interface
  • One-way limitations with iCloud Calendar: While you can sync Google Calendar into Apple’s ecosystem, syncing iCloud Calendar back to Google isn’t as easy
  • May not show all your events right away: Sometimes, newly added events on Google Calendar take a while to appear in Apple Calendar
  • Limited calendar management options: You can’t change Google Calendar sharing settings or access advanced features unless you use the tool directly
  • Lack of templates: You won’t be able to use new Google Calendar templates directly from the Apple Calendar unless you’ve used it before syncing the two apps. You can only access them from your open Google Calendar, and then the changes will sync with Apple Calendar

🧠 Fun Fact: An iPhone has 100,000+ times more processing power than the computer that landed man on the moon! Its memory is also one million (1,048,576, to be precise) times more than the Apollo computer’s in RAM.
