ChatGPT is an advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) model that generates text by leveraging technologies like Natural Language Processing (NLP), Deep Learning (DL), and Machine Learning (ML).

This generative AI technology employs vast training data sets on diverse topics to offer contextual, relevant, and human-like responses to prompts.

As such, it can perform various functions—answering questions, creative writing, holding conversations, performing computations, or other language-related tasks.

Who owns ChatGPT?

ChatGPT was developed by the brilliant minds at OpenAI. Open AI is a research laboratory dedicated to advancing artificial intelligence to benefit humanity. It was started as a non-profit in 2015 by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, and other technocrats. However, in 2019, the organization was restructured as a capped-profit company (LP).

How does ChatGPT work?

ChatGPT harnesses large language models to comprehend and generate human-like text. It gains this capacity from large volumes of training data containing diverse text sources, which it uses to learn context, patterns, and language nuances.

Equipped with this knowledge, ChatGPT accepts a prompt or input to generate coherent and contextually relevant text. The entire process involves analyzing the input, predicting the intent or sequencing of words, and generating an appropriate response.

That’s not all; ChatGPT employs iterative learning to improve response quality across various scenarios.

Of course, that’s just scratching the surface.

Our detailed blog post explains how ChatGPT works.

The evolution of ChatGPT across generations

ChatGPT launched in the November of 2020.

However, its underlying model—Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT)—has undergone several modifications before and after 2020. To understand this, here’s a look at how GPT models have evolved over generations:

GenerationChatGPT modelTraining Data ParametersDescription
1stGPT 1117 millionLaunched in 2018, the first generation of GPT demonstrated the effectiveness of large language models in generating human-like text.
2ndGPT 21.5 billionThe second generation, launched in 2019, displayed remarkable advancements in generative AI. Featuring higher parameters and sophisticated algorithms, it delivered compelling AI-generated text comparable to human writers.
3rdGPT 3175 billionGPT 3 marked a monumental leap in the scale and performance of generative AI. With 175 billion parameters, it was the largest language model ever created. GPT 3 could gain context, generate coherent responses, and perform language-related functions like summarization, translation, and answering questions.
4thGPT 41 trillionGPT 4 is the latest iteration, released in March 2023. It is also the largest and most feature-rich GPT model, priced at $20 per user/ month. GPT 4 is more creative and reliable and can handle nuanced user directions. It also comes with Vision, which allows GPT 4 to process visual inputs.

Regular ChatGPT users may notice we’ve skipped GPT 3.5 in our list. That’s because GPT 3.5 is a slightly more refined sub-class of GPT 3. That said, GPT 3.5 is distinct from GPT 3 and is more advanced than its previous version. It comes with impressive updates and enhancements in terms of performance, ethical considerations, and Reinforcement Learning from Human Preferences (RLHF).

ChatGPT, a Revolutionary Evolution or a Hype: A Comprehensive Assessment

ChatGPT users swear by the AI tool; the latest statistics support this sentiment. However, how does ChatGPT fare in terms of performance?

Here’s a detailed look.

Versatility

ChatGPT boasts 100 million active users. We’ve also seen the rich tapestry of the user base ranging from developers to teenagers. The sheer number of users who turn to ChatGPT for their various requirements is a testament to its versatility.

ChatGPT can generate text for different purposes, from creative writing projects to data-backed reports. Its advanced data analysis capabilities, ability to translate or summarize text, engagement in natural language conversations, acting as your virtual assistant, offering entertainment, etc., make it a highly flexible solution. This adaptability makes it highly versatile for personal and professional use, making its list of applications virtually endless!

Accuracy and reliability

Accuracy and reliability are a point of contention for ChatGPT users. On the one hand, ChatGPT responses exhibit a high level of accuracy and reliability when generating text. On the other hand, the outcomes can be hit or miss.

Case in point:

ChatGPT's response to name countries starting with V
ChatGPT’s response to name countries starting with V

ChatGPT has missed well-known names like Venezuela and Vietnam!

Some studies even discovered variations in the trends surrounding the capability of the different GPT models. For instance, the performance of GPT 4 plunged from an accuracy of 97.6% in March to 2.4% in June for some queries, while the same improved for GPT 3.5 from 7.4% to 86.8%.

One must consider that the quality of the response is a factor of the input quality, query complexity, specificity of domain, and training data. Also, the fact remains that ChatGPT is a language model and not a knowledge model to be factually correct. However, the variations are less than reassuring.

User experience

The ChatGPT’s user experience is generally favorable. After all, it requires minimal cognitive load and is relatively easy to use—you type your question, and ChatGPT will reply. Its responsiveness and conversational style enhance the user experience.

We referred to AI prompt templates to test ChatGPT performance for ourselves. We took a marketing prompt for a cold DM, and here’s what ChatGPT served:

ChatGPT's Cold DM for a sunscreen

Next, we used prompts from project management templates for a Project Charter. Here’s a look at the interaction:

ChatGPT's list of constraints in a Project Charter

The user experience was great until the problems started trickling in for even the simplest of queries. Here’s where everything started to go downhill:

ChatGPT's response to a prompt asking for email headlines
ChatGPT’s inability to perform desired action

This spiraled into an infinite loop, and the AI chatbot never realized the problem!

Cost-benefit analysis

In February 2023, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Plus—a paid subscription plan for GPT 4 that costs $20 per user per month. It was a significant upgrade from the free version, offering faster response times, priority access, internet access, and plugin support. On the other hand, the ChatGPT API follows a pay-per-use model with multiple configurations.

That said, GPT 3.5 continues to be free, and you can still get a lot done with the free version.

The cost of running ChatGPT depends on your usage scale, specific use cases, and available resources. It also depends on how ChatGPT integrates into your workflows to drive automation, efficiency, and productivity. Consider any associated costs, infrastructural requirements, and maintenance expenses.

Use a cost-benefit analysis template to perform such a comprehensive evaluation.

Adoption and integration

ChatGPT gained 1 million users in just five days, which shows how easy it is to adopt. No doubt, the level of awareness surrounding the language model is pretty common in the younger demographic. However, 9% of 45 to 64-year-olds and 5% of 65+ year-olds used ChatGPT in January 2023, demonstrating its impressive adoption rates.

On a professional front, 80% of Fortune 500 companies have opted for ChatGPT Enterprise for various applications. Along the same lines, 8.2% of global company employees reported having used ChatGPT at the workplace to perform a task.

The release of ChatGPT API has unlocked ease of integration, which blends well with its versatility and adaptability. However, please note that successful integration and adoption depend on the stakeholders’ awareness and technical literacy, customization of solutions, and optimization to meet specific business requirements.

Security and privacy

Security and privacy have been thorns stuck in ChatGPT’s side.

More than half of Southeast Asians cited data privacy and security as a concern, discouraging them from using the service.

ChatGPT was temporarily banned in Italy for scraping data from books, the web, Reddit posts, etc., for training. Such data sources must have included personal information that was not explicitly shared with OpenAI, violating the GDPR.

Ars Technica also reported how a ChatGPT user claimed that his conversations were leaked. Although OpenAI maintains that the account may have been compromised, it still looks into the dark underbelly of how little we know about ChatGPT’s data privacy and security practices.

The OpenAI privacy policy is pretty boilerplate, indicating that it collects account information, information entered, and other identifiers pulled from the device or browser. However, the fact that it records and stores transcripts of your conversation may be unsettling for some.

Ethical considerations

Ethical concerns surrounding ChatGPT revolve around bias, fairness, and responsible use of the AI tool. AI Ethicists have raised concerns regarding the role of ChatGPT in perpetuating stereotypes, propagating misinformation, or generating harmful content. ChatGPT has been in the news for helping write and spread malicious code or getting tricked into sharing a step-by-step plan to destroy humanity

We’ve seen that OpenAI recognizes these concerns and is gradually finetuning sensitive and disallowed content on GPT 4. Our experience has been pretty positive so far.

ChatGPT's responses to sensitive topics
ChatGPT displays increased sensitivity while answering queries

Of course, the above few examples do not cover the full range of ethical concerns and do not assuage all of them. However, ethics in AI is a lengthy discourse.

What businesses or individuals can do, however, is to prioritize ethical considerations while using or deploying ChatGPT.

It performed better than ChatGPT!

2. Google Gemini: Problem-solving and multimodal capabilities

Formerly known as Google’s Bard, Gemini is a multimodal AI model that can process information from text, images, videos, and code. Gemini focuses on boosting productivity through robust problem-solving rather than limiting its role to a large language model like ChatGPT.

Gemini outperforms GPT 3.5, and Gemini Ultra outshines GPT 4 in the Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU) test.

To test this, we ran the same question about countries starting with V, and here’s what Gemini had to say:

Gemini's response naming countries from V

While ChatGPT gave two options, Gemini gave six—pretty good!

Another major USP of Gemini lies in its native integration with Google Workspace to help you work on Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc. As such, you can draft documents, process data, make presentations, and more without stepping out of familiar environments.

3. Microsoft Copilot: Interacting with Microsoft suite

What Gemini is to Google Workspace, Microsoft Copilot is to the Microsoft Suite.

You can use Microsoft Copilot with Microsoft 365 to boost productivity and work inside your everyday apps like Word, Excel, and Outlook. It runs on the GPT 4 architecture, which means you get higher accuracy and reliability than the free version of ChatGPT. It also accepts multimodal inputs.

However, Microsoft Copilot has a daily limit on prompts, which may dwindle quickly! Also, if you’re not a Microsoft 365 user, signing up for Microsoft Edge or Bing can be quite an inconvenience when accessing Microsoft Copilot.

We went with our classic question, and Microsoft Copilot fared much better than ChatGPT:

Microsoft Copilot's detailed response listing countries starting with V

It also shared useful links and other resources that can be helpful for research.

4. Claude: Natural and creative content generation

Practicing language using Claude

It operates on the GPT 4 language model and is trained to comprehend code structure and patterns across various programming languages.

6. Semrush ContentShake AI: Optimized content generation

ContentShake AI does two things right. First, it generates content ideas or quality drafts at lightning speed, and second, it ensures the content is optimized to rank on search engines.

Combining AI and real-time competitor insights helps marketers prepare a solid content calendar without extensive research.

From brainstorming to publication, ContentShake helps you generate SEO-friendly articles tailored to attract organic traffic and drive engagement.

While it offers collaborative features and seamless integration, such as writing or editing content on Google Docs and publishing directly on WordPress, it lacks integration with crucial writing tools like Grammarly. The inflexibility of the initial prompt also makes ContentShake sometimes challenging to work with.

7. Perplexity: Real-time browsing and fact-checking

From the scientists of OpenAI and the brains behind GPT 3 comes Perplexity AI.

Perplexity is an AI-powered search and answer engine that offers reliable responses to user queries. It leverages NLP to understand questions, searches the web or draws from its knowledge base, and delivers a conversational answer. Perplexity answers are accurate and exhaustive compared to search engine giants like Google.

It makes up for what it lacks in content generation and problem-solving capabilities by conducting detailed and thorough research. It is far more accurate than other large language models but is not immune to occasional hallucinations either.
