The Promotion Playbook: How to Get a Raise

Below are some simple things you can add to your every day that helped me accelerate my career. We all have to be at work all day, why not go above and beyond instead of wasting time like everyone else. This Playbook is everything you need to break away from the status quo and stand out at your job!

Promotion Plays:

Master your current role

This one is obvious but should not be taken for granted. Stay a little longer or come in a little earlier. Find ways to stand above everyone else. (Numbers go a long way!) Then start teaching others to prove your strength!

Make your accomplishments visible and valuable

It’s great to be humble, but never let your accomplishments go unnoticed. Find natural ways for every win/success you have to be noticed by your managers.

Pay attention to how you’re spending your time. Are you concentrated on a project that the entire company will be pleased you did? Or is your time focused on something that only you find important?

Summarize your work visually. When talking about your work to your colleagues, give them something to look at. When you answer the question, ‘Why are people buying?’ show a chart of the top sales with numbers to back them up. It makes everyone a believer when they can see a snapshot validating your point.

Know your “Why”

Your boss will be much more willing to help if they know why you want that promotion. Everyone wants money, or a higher title, but there is one thing that will set you apart from everyone else. A “Why” that has purpose, emotion, and makes your boss pull for you to succeed.

This can be hard for most people and no one truly understands this one. The ironic thing is everyone in life has been through something challenging, they just never learn how to apply it. Think about why you want this promotion. Do you want to be able to help your family? Be a role model to others? Or do you just want to prove people wrong.

Whatever the case may be, keep this at the front of your mind throughout your entire day. When what drives you is top of mind, you find solutions for problems rather than a reason to procrastinate.

Make your boss’s life easier

This is probably the easiest and most effective concept in my handbook, and the number one reason I got promoted. Ask your boss ambitiously, “What is something on your plate that would make your life easier if you didn’t have to take care of it consistently?” From there let them know you are hungry for more work and would be delighted to step up and take care of this for them moving forward.

Next, proactively look for similar tasks that are a burden to them. If possible, start completing these for your boss without them even having to ask. If you do a great job They’ll be simply amazed and excited to go out of their way and return the favor.

Find a big “Outside the Box” project that will help your company

This is not something that happens overnight, but stay on the lookout for an opportunity to help your company as a whole. Something will surface if you keep at it. Build it up and create a process showing the accomplishments you’ve made and how this translates into progress for the company.

Offer solutions, not problems

Anyone can look around and identify a problem. Equally, anyone can offer a solution, it just requires a higher level of thought. Instead of telling your boss the company is about to lose an account, offer a solution as to how you can fix the situation and keep the relationship.

Your idea doesn’t have to be mind blowing. Simply showing that you’re concerned with the next step will showcase your ability to think constructively.

ALWAYS respond well to criticism

If you’re criticized remember, it’s all good. Look at this as an opportunity for both parties and thank them for the feedback. This shows strength beyond measure and allows you to grow faster than your colleagues.

Make it a point to show them you took their words to heart, and find ways to show them you listened. This is especially true with your superiors. Managers eat that shit up when you learn and grow from their criticism.

Own Projects From Start to Finish

Organizations place a premium on individuals who follow through on tasks. If you can prove you consistently own projects from start to finish, you will not only be noticed, but you’ll also make yourself indispensable.

Keep a Positive Attitude

The people who typically get promoted keep their cool during stressful times. They also act as role models to everyone around them. They meet deadlines and ask relevant, intelligent questions that help clients be more successful with the company. When an issue arises, they want to solve it and work to avoid future problems by learning from their mistakes.

Keeping a positive attitude will make others want you to succeed. Who wants to help the person who ruins everyone mood? No one. But that rep who goes out of their way to help others, everyone wants and expects them to get promoted.

Acquire New Knowledge and Skills

It goes without saying, but one of the best ways to succeed with a promotion is expanding your knowledge and skills in areas that are critical to the organization. As technology and everything else in the world changes rapidly, you need an expanding skill set not only to perform your job, but to stay marketable.

Add more value and sound more intelligent by staying current with your client’s industry’s news and events. Pay attention to trends in your surrounding industries and find ways to apply that knowledge to tasks your company works on frequently.
