How to Use an Empathy Map Template

Empathy maps can be a great tool for better understanding the wants and needs of a customer or group. Here are 6 steps to help you create an empathy map:

1. Choose a target audience

Before you create an empathy map, you’ll need to decide who you’re creating it for. This could be a specific customer, a team, or even a specific demographic.

Create a Doc in ClickUp to brainstorm ideas for target audiences and narrow down your choices.

2. Define the goal

What is the main goal of creating the empathy map? Are you trying to understand customer needs, identify potential solutions, or get feedback on an existing product.

Create a Goal in ClickUp to keep track of the goal of the empathy map.

3. Gather information

Research your target audience. Find out what their values are, what they need, and what their pain points are. This will help you to create a more effective empathy map.

Create tasks in ClickUp to track each data point you’re researching.

4. Create the map

Now it’s time to create the empathy map. Start by drawing a rectangle and then dividing it into four sections for Thoughts, Feelings, Needs, and Actions.

Use the Board view in ClickUp to draw out your empathy map.

5. Fill out the map

With the map structure in place, it’s time to fill it out. For each of the four sections, add the relevant information you gathered about your target audience.

Use the Calendar view in ClickUp to set reminders for yourself to add data to each section of the empathy map.

6. Review and adjust

Once you’ve filled out the empathy map, take a step back and review it. Are there any areas that need to be adjusted or updated.

Create Automations in ClickUp to remind you to review and adjust your empathy map on a regular basis.
