How to Choose the Right Template
The templates here cover the work most project teams repeat every quarter: kicking off projects, tracking risk, planning timelines, and reporting on progress. The trick is picking by the job to be done, not by what looks impressive.
Start with the structure of the work. Methodologies set how your team delivers: reach for a Sprint Board or Kanban Board if you ship in short iterations, a Waterfall plan if your scope is fixed and phase gated. Key Terms templates are the governance every project needs regardless of method: a Project Charter to align stakeholders at kickoff, a RACI Matrix to settle who owns what, a Project Plan to map scope to timeline.
If you only take one, take the Project Plan. It carries scope, timeline, milestones, and status in a single view and adapts to any methodology. Once the work is underway, add a RACI Matrix to clarify ownership and a Gantt Chart to visualize the schedule against dependencies.
Every template opens in ClickUp as a live view, and most also download as an Excel workbook or Google Sheets copy. You can switch formats on any individual template page without losing the structure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Start with the Project Plan. It covers scope, timeline, milestones, and status for any methodology. Once the work is underway, add a RACI Matrix to clarify ownership and a Gantt Chart to map the schedule. The best for label on each card points you to the right fit.
Yes. Every template here is free and ungated. The ClickUp versions open as live views in a free workspace. The Excel and Google Sheets versions download or copy with no sign up required.
Most templates are also available as Excel workbooks, Google Sheets copies, or Word documents. Look for the format badges on each card and use the Format filter at the top to show only the ones you can open. A few that rely on live task data, like the Sprint Board, are ClickUp only.
A project plan template captures the full picture: scope, objectives, milestones, budget, risk, and status. A Gantt chart template focuses specifically on visualizing the timeline with task bars, dependencies, and milestone markers. Most teams use both: the plan for alignment, the Gantt for scheduling.
