Every notable ChatGPT update, tracked as it ships. We monitor OpenAI's official release notes, model deployments, and pricing adjustments so you can see exactly what changed and when. Each entry includes the date, what shipped, and whether it affects your workflows. For our full evaluation, see the ChatGPT review.

OpenAI shipped 18 consumer-facing updates between March 1 and April 30, 2026, including two new model tiers, a complete image generation overhaul, and the introduction of ads on free plans. The pace of iteration has accelerated significantly compared to 2025.

April 2026
Model selection moves to the composer Ui

Model selection now appears in the composer on web so you can pick the right model before sending a message. Thinking effort controls also move into the model picker. Available on Plus, Pro, and Business plans.

GPT-5.5 released in ChatGPT Model Major

New flagship model for professional work with stronger multi step reasoning, tool use, coding, research, document creation, and agentic workflows. GPT-5.5 Thinking and GPT-5.5 Pro also available for eligible paid plans.

What this means: GPT-5.5 is the biggest model jump since GPT-5 launched in August 2025. If you rely on ChatGPT for coding, research, or document creation, expect noticeably better results on complex, multi step tasks. Enterprise and Edu workspace availability depends on admin settings.
Fast answers mode Feature

New mode that responds faster to common information seeking questions with high confidence answers. Skips past chats and memory. Available globally on web, iOS, and Android. Can be turned off in Personalization settings.

ChatGPT for Clinicians launched Feature Major

Free version of ChatGPT for verified U.S. clinicians with clinical search, citations, reusable skills, deep medical research, documentation support, and CME credits. Appears as a separate workspace under the same login.

What this means: A significant signal of OpenAI moving into vertical, regulated markets. Clinical search and citations are purpose built for healthcare workflows, not just general ChatGPT with a medical prompt.
ChatGPT Images 2.0 Feature Major

New image generation model available on all ChatGPT plans. Also introduces images with thinking, where the model plans and refines outputs before generating. Thinking images available on all paid plans.

What this means: Replaces the previous DALL-E based generation. The 'images with thinking' approach produces noticeably better planned compositions, especially for text in image requests and iterative editing.
Ads roll out to Australia, New Zealand, and Canada Pricing

Ads now appear for Free and Go plan users in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans remain ad free.

GPT-5.3 Instant Mini released Model

New fallback model replacing GPT-5 Instant Mini. Activates when users hit rate limits for GPT-5.3 Instant. More natural conversation, stronger writing, and better contextual awareness than its predecessor. Does not appear in the model picker.

Outlook app supports shared mailboxes and calendars Feature

The Outlook Email and Calendar apps now support delegated workflows: reading and managing shared mailboxes, sending from shared addresses, and creating or updating events on shared calendars. Requires appropriate Microsoft permissions.

ChatGPT in CarPlay Feature

Hands free ChatGPT voice conversations now available through Apple CarPlay. Requires iOS 26.4 or newer. Users can also resume existing mobile voice conversations.

March 2026
Updated Box, Notion, Linear, and Dropbox apps Feature

New app actions including write capabilities for supported apps. Users with existing connections need to reconnect for the updated experience.

Mobile sidebar simplified Ui

Plan based experiences like Images, Codex, Pulse, and Apps now appear in a horizontal bar above chats and projects on iOS and Android, clearing space in the sidebar.

Legacy deep research mode removed Feature

The legacy deep research mode is removed. The current deep research experience remains unchanged and historical conversations and results stay accessible.

Large pastes handled as attachments Ui

Pasting more than 5,000 characters into the composer now automatically converts the content to an attachment. Keeps the composer cleaner and prevents large pastes from consuming the context window. Available on Plus, Pro, and Business plans.

Shopping updates Feature

ChatGPT can now search products, compare prices, and surface shopping results. Available on web and mobile.

GPT-5.4 mini released Model

New lightweight reasoning model. Available to Free and Go users via the Thinking feature in the + menu. For paid users, serves as a rate limit fallback for GPT-5.4 Thinking.

Codex for Students launched Feature

Students can sign in at chatgpt.com/codex/students, verify through SheerID with their university email, and receive coding credits. Credits expire 12 months after the grant date.

GPT-5.1 models fully retired Model Major

GPT-5.1 Instant, GPT-5.1 Thinking, and GPT-5.1 Pro are no longer available. Existing conversations automatically continue on GPT-5.3 Instant, GPT-5.4 Thinking, or GPT-5.4 Pro respectively.

What this means: If you had custom GPTs or workflows tuned to GPT-5.1 behavior, test them with the replacement models. Most users will not notice a difference since GPT-5.3 and GPT-5.4 are strict upgrades.
GPT-5.3 Instant tone and style update Model

Update to GPT-5.3 Instant that improves follow up tone and reduces teaser style phrasing in responses. Eliminates patterns like 'If you want...', 'You'll never believe...', and similar clickbait style phrasings.

Interactive visual modules for formulas and variables Feature

When asking about certain topics, ChatGPT can now present interactive visual modules that let you experiment with formulas and variables in real time.

GPT-5.4 Thinking released Model Major

New frontier model combining coding capabilities of GPT-5.3 Codex with improved tool use, spreadsheet creation, and agentic workflows. GPT-5.4 Thinking provides upfront plan visibility so users can adjust course mid response. GPT-5.4 Pro also available for deeper reasoning tasks.

What this means: The upfront plan feature is a genuine workflow improvement. Instead of waiting for a long response and then redirecting, you can steer GPT-5.4 while it's still thinking. This is especially useful for research and multi step coding tasks.
ChatGPT for Excel (beta) Feature Major

Build, update, and analyze spreadsheets directly inside Excel. Limited beta in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Enterprise and Edu workspaces default to off with admin enablement required.

What this means: This is OpenAI's clearest move into embedded workflow tools. If your team lives in Excel, this turns ChatGPT from a separate tab into a native spreadsheet assistant.
Nerdy personality preset removed Ui

The preset Nerdy base style has been removed to simplify options and improve response quality. Users who selected it are moved to the default personality.

February 2026
GPT-5 base models retired Model Major

GPT-5 base models are no longer available in ChatGPT. All users default to GPT-5.3 Instant or newer. GPT-5 had been the default since its August 2025 launch.

What this means: Marks the end of the original GPT-5 era. All conversation history remains accessible, but new chats route to GPT-5.3 or GPT-5.4 family models.
GPT-5.2 Extended thinking restored Model

Extended thinking level for GPT-5.2 Thinking restored to its prior setting after an inadvertent reduction in January. The thinking level toggle now correctly reflects three distinct levels.

January 2026
More visual and scannable responses Ui

Responses to everyday questions now include at-a-glance visuals. Important people, places, products, and ideas are highlighted inline. Tapping a highlight opens a side panel with key facts and trusted sources.

Thinking time adjustments Model

Standard and Light thinking time lowered for reasoning models based on user preference for faster responses. Extended thinking setting for GPT-5.2 was unintentionally reduced and later corrected on February 4.
