Free Flowchart Template

A dual format flowchart template that includes both a basic flowchart layout and a three lane swimlane version. The basic layout has 12 pre positioned shapes (start oval, 6 process rectangles, 2 decision diamonds, 2 branching paths, and end oval) connected with directional arrows. The swimlane version adds horizontal lanes for three roles or departments with the same step types pre placed across lanes. Both versions include a symbol reference card explaining each shape's meaning.

How to Use This Template

1

Choose Basic or Swimlane Format

Use the basic layout for processes performed by a single person or team. Use the swimlane version when the process involves handoffs between multiple roles, departments, or systems. The swimlane format makes accountability visible at every step.

2

Define Your Start and End Points

Replace the placeholder text in the start and end ovals with your actual process triggers and completion criteria. A clear start point ("Customer submits support ticket") and end point ("Ticket resolved and closed") bounds the scope of your flowchart.

3

Fill In Process Steps and Decisions

Replace the placeholder text in each rectangle with your actual process steps, starting each with a verb. Replace the placeholder text in each diamond with your actual decision questions. Ensure every decision has exactly two labeled outputs (Yes/No). Add or remove shapes as needed for your process.

4

Review and Version

Walk through the completed flowchart step by step to verify accuracy. Check that every path leads to either the next step or the end point with no dead ends. Add a title, date, version number, and author. Share with the team that performs the process to validate before publishing.

What This Flowchart Template Covers

This template provides a pre formatted flowchart structure with the standard ANSI symbol set already in place: ovals for start and end, rectangles for process steps, diamonds for decision points, and directional arrows connecting each element. It includes both a basic flowchart layout and a swimlane version with three pre built lanes for cross functional processes.

The template works for any process you need to visualize: employee onboarding workflows, customer support escalation paths, approval processes, order fulfillment sequences, incident response procedures, or any workflow with sequential steps and decision points.

Common Questions About Free Flowchart Template

How do I add more steps to the template?

Copy an existing rectangle shape and paste it into the flow where the new step belongs. Reconnect the arrows to maintain the directional path. Keep the same spacing and alignment as the existing shapes for visual consistency. Most diagramming tools support snap to grid which makes alignment automatic.

Can I add more than three lanes to the swimlane version?

Yes. Add horizontal lanes by copying an existing lane and adjusting the height of the diagram. Most processes are well served by 3 to 5 lanes. Beyond 5 lanes, the diagram becomes wide enough to lose readability. If you need more than 5 lanes, consider breaking the process into sub processes.

What tool should I use to edit this flowchart template?

Any diagramming or whiteboard tool works: ClickUp Whiteboards, Lucidchart, Miro, draw.io, Visio, or Google Drawings. The template structure transfers to any tool that supports basic shapes and connectors. For collaborative editing with remote teams, browser based tools like ClickUp Whiteboards or Lucidchart allow real time co editing.
