The organization is already spinning up another project to&nbsp;build, configure, or implement another solution to the same business problem your endeavor was supposed to solve. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What happened? How did everything go off the rails after you wrapped up the undertaking?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps, while focusing our energy&nbsp;towards&nbsp;the project&#8217;s tangible deliverables, we forgot about the intangibles:&nbsp;Projects are agents of change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By nature, the purpose of a project is to bring something from one state to another.&nbsp;People sometimes resist change. Some individuals love change.&nbsp;It marks new beginnings, up-leveling, and forward movement, while&nbsp;others&nbsp;are change adverse for various reasons like whether it will change what they are doing&nbsp;on a daily basis, will it be more work for them, what if they can\u2019t learn the new way of being or operating.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/clickup.com\/blog\/change-management-templates\/\">Change management<\/a> helps to identify those points of resistance and uses <a href=\"https:\/\/clickup.com\/blog\/change-management-software\/\">change management tools<\/a> and techniques to address them for the best possible adoption.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, the question is:<em> Are we doing&nbsp;the necessary&nbsp;things&nbsp;in our projects to help prepare our stakeholders for change?&nbsp;<\/em>\ud83e\udd14<em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Do our projects truly deliver business benefits, or do they just create products and services?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>And what&#8217;s the project manager&#8217;s role in preparing the organization for change? Businesses and corporations don&#8217;t make the decision to change, associates who belong to them do.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People are the living and breathing things that make organizations run\u2014the heartbeat of the structure.&nbsp;We need them, value them, and honor the change journey they travel.&nbsp; All improvements (big or small) require change and OCM aids in championing these efforts by providing assessments and <a href=\"https:\/\/clickup.com\/blog\/succession-planning-templates\/\">succession plans<\/a> to arrive at the best business outcome.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of it at this level: Is your project going to change a person\u2019s location, process, system,&nbsp;tools, job role, mindset, reporting structure, compensation or behavior? Are they ready, willing, and able to take on this new change?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider the degree of impact that your project has along with how each person processes the change will help you understand what level of Change Management is necessary to make sure your project is successful long after you are onto your next project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because&nbsp;at the end of the day,&nbsp;you may have the \u201cperfect\u201d project closed out with all your KPIs scores with high marks, but if the people that you impacted do not change how they do their job to support your project, it will ultimately be a failure and you will not achieve what you set out to do from the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organizational change is&nbsp;<em>not&nbsp;<\/em>project change.&nbsp;Project management processes concerned with shifts in an initiative, like change requests, logs, committees, are not the focus of organizational change management. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather, OCM focuses on interventions throughout the project that can promote an initiative.&nbsp;It affects communications, project leadership, managing resisters, and many other things.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-what-is-the-difference-between-organizational-change-management-and-project-management-\">What&nbsp;Is the&nbsp;Difference&nbsp;Between Organizational Change Management and Project Management?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Project management<\/strong> focuses on the technical side of change.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Project managers are concerned with fulfilling requirements of time, budget, scope, quality,&nbsp;among many other areas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Change management<\/strong> addresses the human&nbsp;and&nbsp;people side of change.&nbsp;Change&nbsp;management practitioners&nbsp;are dedicated to preparing people in the areas of awareness, desire, knowledge, ability, and reinforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be thinking, \u201cI expertly <a href=\"https:\/\/clickup.com\/blog\/stakeholder-management\/\">manage stakeholders<\/a>\u00a0and the team in my role as a project manager every day\u201d<s>\u00a0\u00a0<\/s>what&#8217;s the difference?\u00a0\u00a0\ud83e\udd14<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although there can be crossover on what change management and project management focuses&nbsp;on, they&#8217;re two very distinct and separate disciplines.&nbsp;Each has specific methodologies, tools, and techniques, and desired outcomes.&nbsp;The shared goals of both are to create a sustainable change, improve adoption, and have a positive impact on resources.&nbsp;Change management and project management complement each other and are most effective when implemented simultaneously and with a Organizational Change Management&nbsp;and&nbsp;Project Management, how can we incorporate both into our projects?&nbsp;<em>&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Do I really need both a project manager and a change manager?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ideally, your projects will have both a change manager and a project manager.&nbsp;&nbsp;With that said, change managers and project managers must work together as a team to integrate their activities.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organizational Change Management is an investment (time and money) in getting leadership the tools to support the people side of change.&nbsp;Don&#8217;t let this scare you or let it stand in the way of including OCM in your projects.&nbsp;The benefits of this investment far outweigh the &#8220;costs.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Organizational change management can help:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increase project success&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support clear messages about the change and improve communication with teams&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make changes happen in a faster, more cost-effective way&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make people&#8217;s work lives better by prioritizing human beings&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Empower employees to embrace and be comfortable of change.&nbsp;Things like coaching, assessments, sponsor&nbsp;and leadership&nbsp;engagement,&nbsp;and&nbsp;training can support project success.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div techniques&nbsp;into your practice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is an overview of common change management tools, techniques,&nbsp;and plans that project managers&nbsp;can familiarize themselves with and&nbsp;add to their arsenal for positive project outcomes.&nbsp;Some require very little time and can provide information that is invaluable.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-tools-and-techniques-of-organizational-change-management-\">Tools&nbsp;and Techniques&nbsp;of Organizational&nbsp;Change&nbsp;Management&nbsp;<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The main tools used in Organizational Change Management are assessments and plans.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Assessments:<\/strong>&nbsp; Assessments can be utilized throughout the life of the project but are especially useful in preparation for change.&nbsp;<s>&nbsp;<\/s>Various assessments are available to determine:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Individual, departmental, and organizational readiness for change<s>,<\/s>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The risk the change might pose<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whether or not the components of leadership, change management, and project management resources are in place&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sponsor evaluation&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Team member competency&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The results of those evaluations are used to create tailored and scaled plans.&nbsp; A few common types of assessments in change management are:&nbsp;ADKAR, Change Impact Assessments, Organizational Readiness Assessments, <a href=\"https:\/\/clickup.com\/blog\/stakeholder-analysis\/\">Stakeholder Analysis<\/a>, among others.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> It goes without saying that having a member of the planning team These documents spell out activities or roles that will need managerial attention during the execution of a project or institutional change.&nbsp;These tactics are developed, and action must be taken for them to be effective.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Coaching Plans for Managers<\/strong>-Change managers utilize a&nbsp;\u201cCoach the Coaches\u201d approach to drive change\u200b. The specialized assessments help to identify coaching needs\u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Resistance Plans\u200b<\/strong>-Let\u2019s face it, resistance happens.&nbsp; Resistance plans can facilitate the&nbsp;identification and management of \u2018flight risk\u2019 users\u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sponsor Roadmaps<\/strong>-Like the name implies, a&nbsp;sponsorship roadmap acts a guide or path for the sponsor.&nbsp; It outlines the activities sponsors take to make sure their team gets the necessary encouragement during the project implementation lifecycle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Training Plans<\/strong>-Training plans are tailored based on the results of the assessments<s>.&nbsp;<\/s>&nbsp;Gamification tools and onboarding activities (gamified training strategies) can help aid learning and support positivity in learning a new tool or skill.\u200b Who doesn\u2019t love adding a little fun into training sessions?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Communication plans<\/strong>-How we communicate change matters.&nbsp; Detailed communication plans are key to messaging during the various phases of a project.&nbsp; Change managers focus on content, the timing of messages, suggested format (in-person meeting, email, phone call), the preferred sender of specific communication(s), receivers, and more<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Corrective Actions Plan-When a team member is not processing change well, a corrective actions <a href=\"https:\/\/clickup.com\/blog\/transition-plan-templates\/\">plan works to assist the transition<\/a>.&nbsp;This type of plan helps to identify the challenge and create steps towards a solution&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Celebrate Successes<\/strong>-Having a strategy to commend individual and team change is key to morale.&nbsp;Change can be tough.
