A control is a process or policy you put in place to mitigate the risk of an event occuring that could compromise the security, confidentiality, availability, integrity, or privacy of sensitive data.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a smoke detector is a control to detect if a fire is burning in your home, and a bicycle helmet is a control to prevent head injury while riding your bike.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same concept applies to protecting data and implementing an effective security program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Proving that you\u2019ve designed and implemented effective controls to satisfy the SOC 2 criteria is accomplished in a SOC 2 audit, conducted by a certified public accountant (CPA). The result of your SOC 2 audit is a SOC 2 report, commonly known as an <strong>attestation report<\/strong>\u2026 fancy!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, there are two types of SOC 2 compliance that serve different purposes:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>SOC 2 Type 1: <\/strong>This report attests to whether the design of your controls meets the SOC 2 trust services criteria&nbsp; as of a specific date&nbsp; (i.e. March 3, 2021)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>SOC 2 Type 2: <\/strong>This report attests to whether the design <em>and operating effectiveness<\/em> of your controls meets the SOC 2 trust services criteria over a specific period of time (i.e. March &#8211; September 2021)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>P.S. The acronyms aren\u2019t so bad, right? \ud83d\ude03<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1-why-you-shouldn%E2%80%99t-put-off-compliance\">Why You Shouldn\u2019t Put off Compliance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Just as <a href=\"https:\/\/clickup.com\/blog\/project-deliverables\/\">project deliverables<\/a> are a key component to completing a project, compliance is a key component to building a strong security program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what does a \u201cclean\u201d SOC 2 report mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It means that you\u2019ve taken the right steps and implemented the right policies, procedures, and controls to meet the SOC 2 criteria. Don\u2019t lose a deal because you can\u2019t prove compliance.
